Myanmar Pediatric Society

Myanmar Pediatric Society (MPS) is one of the specialty societies under the umbrella of Myanmar Medical Association. MPS was established in 1960 together with establishment of Yangon Children Hospital. Previously Pediatrics was part of General Medicine and Pediatric ward for hospitalized children was also at general medical ward of Yangon General Hospital.

Providing leadership to optimize the health & wellbeing of all children in Myanmar and protecting interest and wellbeing of its members.

Vision

Our mission will be accomplished through the following practices:

  1. Providing the best care to every child
  2. Promoting the standards of excellence in continuing pediatric education, sub-specialty training, research and community-based programs

Myanmar Pediatric Society was first organized by Dr. Barua who was the first President of the society. Dr. Po Po and Dr. Khin Than Nu were secretaries at that time.

Professor Kyaw Linn has been President of MPS since 2018 to date.

There are around 1200 members in 2020, around 900 full members and 300 associate members.

Activities of MPS

Academic activities

MPS hosts local conferences, usually biennially and 18th Pediatric specialty Conference was held in 2018. Some international conferences were also successfully hosted such as ASEAN Pediatric Federation Conference (APFC) in 2017 and 7th Asian Vaccine Conference in 2019. During Covid-19 era, Virtual Master Classes were organized by MPS.

There are two refresher courses every year and monthly CMEs. Myanmar Pediatric Journal is published 4 times per year. Myanmar Pediatric Society Management Guideline 3rd Edition was published in 2018.

Since 2015, in Collaboration with Royal College of Paediatrics and Child Health, Global Child Health team, Emergency Pediatric Care Program (EPCP) and Myanmar Neonatal Care Program (MNCP) are functioning in selected district hospitals. BMJ award (Excellence in Medical Education) “Recognizing excellence in South Asian Health Care” was received by EPCP team members of MPS and RCPCH in December 2018.

MRCPCH clinical exams are hosted every year since 2015 and over one hundred of MRCPCH holders were produced.

Social Activities

MPS supports welfare of its member. Every year Annual General Meeting is organized by Executive Committee. Distinction holders of final MBBS exam and Young Pediatrician awards are given every year at the meeting. Outstanding Pediatrician Award, nominated by members, to pediatricians with excellent contribution to society and pediatric patients are also given every year. Social as well financial support is given to members with illness. Educational funding is also supported to scholars.

Community Health

Before COVID- 19 Pandemic, pediatricians arranged outreach clinics to remote and underserved areas. Charity clinic was run in outskirt area of Yangon once a month. Currently, they are temporarily postponed. Tele consultation is practiced instead for children with chronic conditions by respective specialist pediatricians.
